ST JOHN THE BAPTIST CHURCH The church is dedicated to the patron saint of the town and is Gothic in style with Mudajar elements. However its towers, which replaced the old bell tower and were built this century, are neogothic. Construction of the building began in the middle of the 16th century on the remains of the old chapel that used to stand on the site and was not finished until the middle of the 18th century. Inside are housed some valuable works of art, though for its originality the most notable piece is a near two metre high figure of Christ which was made by a tribe of Indian Mexicans from a paste derived from the corn plant. There are also some pieces by Luján Pérez and a Flemish carving and an altarpiece of similar origin from the 16th century .

LEÓN Y CASTILLO HOUSE-MUSEUM
Fernando de León y Castillo was one of the most prestigious Canarian politicians on a national level. In the house where he was born there are numerous objects and documents on show which belonged to this brilliant statesman who was both minister and ambassador for Spain. He was the driving force behind the construction of the Las Palmas port ( Puerto de la Luz ), thanks to which the capital city owes a major part of its later development. The House-Museum is also a fine example of Mudejar architecture.

MONTAÑA DE LAS CUATRO PUERTAS ( FOUR DOORS MOUNTAIN ) A group of caves which used to be the home of the Island's aboriginal inhabitants. According to historians, the caves would have been both dwelling and work place for embalmers. Also living here would have been the " faicanes " or priests in charge of the funerals and the " harimaguadas " (sacred virgins) who were the women who made the wraps in which the mummies were placed.

BEACHES AND SPORT The borough has some fine beaches including, amongst others, Melenara, del Hombre, Salinetas, La Garita, and Ojos de Garza. Most of these have a good accommodation infrastructure and are much frequented by the locals. There are are also various autochthonous sports practised in Telde, most notably one involving the use of long poles or sticks and also Canarian wrestling, a sport to which the borough has contributed perhaps the Island's most famous wrestlers.
