THE VALLEY AND ITS SURROUNDINGS
In the westernmost part of the island there appears as though asleep in its valley the town of San Nicolás de Tolentino. Though small in size the place is full of history. One of its mountains in 1483 was the scene of the heaviest defeat of the Castilians at the hands of the native population, while since then there have been numerous acts of protest by the local country folk who fought for centuries both in word and deed for the right to be masters of the lands they had always worked. In the present day, many prospering cooperatives have been formed, that even exports the excellent agricultural produce of the area.

GÜIGÜI BEACH AND THE PORT OF SAN NICOLAS
Due to the almost vertical cliffs that stretch down to the sea, the borough has very few beaches. Of those that do exist the prettiest is Güigüi, with its clean sand and remarkable setting. The Port of San Nicolás, once the point of entry by sea for merchandise and travellers to this part of the Island, is nowadays the commendable setting, on September 11th each year, of the "Fiesta del Charco", a traditional fiesta with aboriginal roots.

GÜIGÜI MASSIF, INAGUA NATURE RESERVE AND THE SOUTHWESTERN MASSIF All of these in fact form parts of Nature Reserves. The area, which is steep and precipitous, is nevertheless well worth crossing via its beautiful though difficult paths in search of some of the spectacular views that are to be found.

OTHER PLACES TO VISIT.
TASARTE AND TASARTICO : Two delightful white villages which are immersed in the silence of the valley, inviting the visitor to while away the time in simple contemplation.
RUBÉN DIAZ PARADOR. At La Aldea beach, with an excellent park full of stone benches and tables made from millstones.
