El ROQUE NUBLO
The ultimate symbol of Gran Canaria. It is in fact an enormous basalt rock in the shape of a monolith and stands some 70 metres high having risen from the ground as a result of volcanic activity during the Pleistocene Age.
A little further northwards another monolithic rock -named EL FRAILE ( the monk ) because of its resemblance to a monk in prayer- cuts across the Gran Canarian sky above the mountain line.
Another sacred site for the aboriginal inhabitants was ROQUE BENTAYGA at the base of which can be seen the exact place where offerings were made to the gods.
FOREST AREAS .
In the borough there are some beautiful areas of forest, such as the pine forests of Inagua and Ojeda . Further north an area known as los Pechos offers some fantastic views, as indeed does almost every spot in this borough, the geometrical centre of the Island.
