San Andrés y Sauces is found divided physically as if it were two municipalities, although united by a common past and future. The population of Los Sauces is centred around the Monsterrat Square and Church, constructed in the 16th Century and still conserving various works of art. However, San Andres, historical and naval, is situated amongst banana plantations, main activity of the municipality along with vegetables and ñame. These fruit of these large green leafed plants is boiled and eaten with fish and Palmerian sauce mojo or with cane honey, which was the ancient main activity in the municipality and from which rum is still produced in a distillery close to Espíndola Port.
The Historical Quarter of San Andres forms one of the most important historical centres on the island. It was the first colonial settlement of the region. Mansions, plazas with palm trees and its 16th Century church are testimony to its history.
To the north of San Andres you can find El Charco Azul a site of natural pools for bathing and, close by, Espíndola Port.
Biosphere Reserve "El Canal y Los Tiles"
Located in San Andrés y Sauces, the natural site of El Canal y Los Tiles was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1983.
Amongst deep gorges and in an area of 511 hectares is one of the most spectacular laurisilva reserves in the world. The favourable climatic and orographic conditions have meant that green forest formations occupy the major part of this protected space. Acebiños, fayas and heather grow alongside trees of grand bearing such as viñatigos, tiles and Flotowia.
In the most humid areas, fern forms dense and eye catching mounds. The route to Los Nacientes de Marcos y Corderos" from Los Tiles is spectacular as it flows through the whole Biosphere Reserve. Another shorter route leaves from the Visitors Centre in Los Tiles towards the viewing point at Las Barandas, from where the Barranco de Agua can be appreciated.
Activities
For the lovers of adventure and trekking, the journey to the Naciente de Marcos y Cordero, via its tunnels and along the canal which collects the water from the cascades, is without doubt one of the most stunning in the island. The Source of Marcos and Corderos is accessed by the district of Las Lomadas.
